Dr Ambika S graduated from Stanley Medical College, Chennai in 1996; Diploma in Ophthalmology from the Medical Research Foundation in 1999; Diploma of the National Board of Examinations in 2000.
In 1999, she was awarded the Best Outgoing Postgraduate (DO) Award.
Around 1999-2000, she underwent special training in Neuro-ophthalmology at the Medical Research Foundation of Sankara Nethralaya.

Since 2000 she has worked as a consultant in this department and is now Head of the Department of Neurophthalmology, which has 5 qualified full-time consultants. She is also a senior consultant in the Cataract and IOL departments and has conducted several cataract surgeries such as the new Micro incision phacoemulsification with folding monofocal/multifocal intraocular lens implants over the last 20 years.
She co-authored the book “The Sankara Nethralaya Atlas of Neuro-ophthalmology” which is the first Indian Atlas in this specialty published in 2002. In 2007, the second edition of the ‘Atlas of Neuro-ophthalmology’ was published.
Subsequently, in 2015, she published the “Sankara Nethralaya Atlas of Neuro Imaging in Ophthalmology.” She has participated in numerous national and international conferences on Ophthalmology, Neurology and Neurochirurgy as a guest speaker and chairperson.
She is also a member of the Executive Board of the Indian Neuro Ophthalmic Society. She is also a member of a number of ophthalmic and neurological societies. She has a number of publications in various national, international ophthalmology, and neurology journals and has also published many chapters in neurology, ophthalmology textbooks. She has educated many graduates and fellows in her academic career.
