    He is skilled in the treatment of ENT disorders such as sinusitis, snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea, allergic rhinitis, speech issues, thyroid nodules, neck lumps, hearing loss, tinnitus, and giddiness.
    Dr Tan is a President’s Scholar with over two decades of experience in clinical and surgical practice. He was a senior consultant and head of the department of otolaryngology (ENT) at the Singapore General Hospital for more than six years (SGH). He regularly supervised and worked on young children with ENT disabilities during his tenure.
  • Dr Tan Yau Boon Barrie is well-known for his experience in the treatment of hearing loss and endoscopic ear surgery.
    Dr Tan Yau Boon Barrie pioneered endoscopic ear surgery at SGH in 2014 and has been a driving force behind the procedure’s acceptance and growth in Singapore ever since. He has done over 100 endoscopic ear surgeries, covering the full spectrum of ear surgeries. Endoscopic tympanoplasty, myringoplasty, tympanomastoidectomy, ossiculoplasty, stapedotomy, and stapedectomy are among the procedures accessible.
    Following completion of his specialist ENT training, he studied at the Ear Science Institute Australia, where he conducted complex ear operations, cochlear implantations, and other hearing implant surgeries independently during his surgical fellowship.
    On his return to Singapore, he was appointed director of the SGH’s Centre for Hearing and Ear Implants, a role he held for nearly seven years.
    He is also an accomplished cochlear implant surgeon, having conducted over 200 cochlear implant surgeries in Singapore and neighboring countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, and Bangladesh.
    He is often invited to speak at international conferences about his experience performing cochlear implant procedures and to teach specialized ear surgery seminars and courses. He has directed several symposia and masterclasses on cochlear implant surgery, including the 2017 and 2018 Singapore General Hospital Cochlear Implant Surgery Masterclass Course.
    Dr Tan Yau Boon Barrie is committed to introducing surgical advances and advancements in medical technology to Singapore and the Southeast Asian region, and is a pioneer in the use of licensed advanced surgical techniques and surgical hearing implants.
    Dr Tan Yau Boon Barrie conducted the first surgeries and implantations in Southeast Asia for the following cochlear implant devices: Advanced Bionics 3D Cochlear Implant (2019) and Advanced Bionics Ultra Cochlear Implant (2019). (2017).
    Additionally, he conducted the first surgeries and implantations in Singapore for the following specialized hearing implants: Transcutaenous Cochlear ATTRACT Bone Anchored Hearing Aid Implant (2015), Cochlear Carina Implant (2014), Cochlear CI 532 cochlear implant (2018), and Advanced Bionics Slim J cochlear implant (2018).     He currently serves as President of the ASEAN Otorhinolaryngological (ENT) Head & Neck Federation and previously served as President of the Singapore Society of Otolaryngology (ENT) Head & Neck Surgery from 2017 to 2019.
    Dr Tan Yau Boon Barrie is also an ardent educator, devoting a large portion of his time to mentoring and training the next generation of ENT surgeons. He served as the director of the SingHealth ENT Residency Training Program from 2012 to 2014. He was also named to the National ENT Residency Advisory Committee, which oversees Singapore’s three ENT residency programs.
    He organized a number of significant ENT conferences in Singapore. He was the conference president of the 6th ASEAN Academy of Neuro-Oto-Audiology (AANOA) Congress in Singapore in 2016 and the organizing president of the 18th ASEAN Otorhinolaryngological Federation Congress in Singapore in 2019.
    Dr Tan Yau Boon Barrie is an administrative innovator in addition to being a surgical innovator. He co-founded the SingHealth-Duke NUS Head and Neck Centre in 2014 and served as its deputy head from 2014 to 2018. He assisted in coordinating the implementation of multidisciplinary head and neck surgery capabilities and the treatment of complex head and neck conditions through SingHealth hospitals and institutions.
    He is very passionate about developing clinical teams. He established and formed Sengkang General Hospital’s new ear, nose, and throat surgery department. From 2013 to 2018, he served as pro-tem head of the department of ENT at Sengkang General Hospital, while concurrently serving as head of the department of (ENT) at SGH.
    Dr Tan Yau Boon Barrie relished the opportunity to build a new diverse team of ENT specialists, audiologists, and nurses and worked diligently to provide the community in the north-eastern part of Singapore with excellent ear, nose, throat, head, and neck surgery services.
    Dr Tan was awarded the Public Service Commission’s President’s Scholarship in 1994 to study medicine at the National University of Singapore. He excelled in medical school, finishing first in his class and earning the Gibb’s Gold Medal in 1999, which is awarded to the student who achieves the highest level of general proficiency over the five-year course.
    He volunteers at the Canossian School, which provides a special education program for children who are deaf or who use hearing aids or cochlear implants. He examines the skin, extracts ear wax, and attends to the preschool children’s ear health concerns. Additionally, he has traveled extensively overseas to do medical mission work in Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
    He believes in using his skillsets to benefit underserved communities and hence regularly volunteers his time and effort pro bono. He previously conducted ear surgeries in rural areas, including myringoplasties and mastoidectomies. He has performed cochlear implant surgeries on deaf Vietnamese children in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in recent years as part of the Hear-The-World initiative.
