- Dr Roy Koh Kiok Miang graduated from NUS in 2000 and completed his Basic Surgical training in 2004, as well as his MRCS (Edin) and Master of Medicine (Surgery) in 2006, before enrolling in the Neurosurgical Advanced Surgical program in 2008. In 2010, he began a fellowship at Professor John Pickard’s Neurosurgical Department at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge. He spent a year there training under one of the top spinal surgeons in the United Kingdom, Mr. Rodney Laing. Following his successful completion of the fellowship examinations (FRCSEd Neuro.surg), he returned to work at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) as a consultant neurosurgeon in the Department of Surgery, where he played a pivotal role in establishing the combined spine service, as the hospital’s first neurosurgical spine consultant. Dr Koh transitioned to private practice in 2014 to provide his patients with a more holistic and efficient level of service. He remains a visiting consultant at KTPH, where he assists in the training of medical students, fellows, and trainee surgeons.
- Dr Roy Koh Kiok Miang is skilled in the management of a broad range of neurosurgical and spinal issues. His interests include minimally invasive (keyhole) spine surgery for tumors, degenerative, and trauma-related spinal problems. He has also performed Singapore’s first minimally invasive removal of a spinal tumor, as well as other spine procedures ranging from simple discectomies, laminectomies, TLIF (transforamina lumbar interbody fusion), cervical fusion, and disc replacements to complex scoliosis. Additionally, he is trained in the management of neuro-oncologic and neurovascular diseases, including microsurgical revascularization for stroke patients, clipping of cerebral aneurysms, excision of brain tumors, evacuation of intracranial hemorrhages, and skull base procedures. Minimal access neurosurgery, employing an endoscope and needlescope, for disorders such as pituitary tumors, and sympathectomy for palmar hyperhydrosis, are all treatments that fall within his skill set. Additionally, he is trained in the use of Gamma knife radiosurgery for the treatment of cerebral metastases, vascular malformations, and trigeminal neuralgias.
- Dr Roy Koh Kiok Miang has been actively involved in the advancement of his passion for neurosurgery and spine surgery. He arranged the first Bedside ICP course in KTPH in 2011 and served as course chairman for the recently finished Fundamentals in Minimal Access Spinal Surgery course conducted in July 2014 at the Khoo Teck Puat advanced surgery training center at National University Hospital. He has also been invited to do surgery in countries such as India and was a visiting specialist surgeon at the 2013 Vietnamese Neurosurgical Congress, demonstrating his revolutionary minimally invasive spine methods to our neighbors.
- Dr Roy Koh Kiok Miang is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, where he serves as an MBBS examiner and is actively involved in the education of the next generation of physicians.
