- Dr Kong Hwai Loong is a visiting expert in medical oncology at the National University Healthcare System and an adjunct associate professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS) (NUHS). Dr Kong formerly served as Executive Director of the Biomedical Research Council (BMRC) and as the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research’s (A*STAR) Deputy Managing Director.
- Dr Kong Hwai Loong graduated from NUS in 1988 with a medical degree. In 1993, he earned his Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) from NUS, as well as his Membership in the Royal College of Physicians (UK). He got his specialty qualification in Medical Oncology in 1998 and was elected to the Academy of Medicine in 1999. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States of America and was elected to the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh) in 2004. Between 1995 and 1997, he completed a postgraduate medical residency at New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center.
- Dr Kong Hwai Loong has won numerous academic accolades, including prizes during his undergraduate medical studies at NUS, the Ministry of Health’s (MoH) HMDP Fellowship to New York, USA, and the National Medical Research Council Research Fellowship to the United States of America. Dr Kong received the Singapore Young Scientist Award for his studies in anti-angiogenesis and gene therapy. Additionally, he received the Merit Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). He is a two-time recipient of the Singapore Youth Award for his contributions to cancer research. He was twice honored with the Ministry of Education’s Service to Education Award for his long-standing commitment to high school education in Singapore, in 2007 and 2013. Dr Kong was also presented with the President of Singapore’s National Day Award for his contributions to scientific research and research administration in Singapore.
- He formerly served as Chairman of the Academy of Medicine’s Chapter of Medical Oncologists, as well as a member of the Ministry of Health’s Specialist Training Committee (Medical Oncology) and the Selection Committee for the Singapore Youth Award Science and Technology. He has served as Governor of Raffles Institution and as a Governor of Raffles Girls’ School for a number of years.
- Dr Kong is an adult cancer specialist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of adult cancers. He also lectures often on oncology-related and youth-related themes.
- Interests in subspecialties include breast, urogenital, gastro-intestinal, lung, and melanoma malignancies.
