Education & Experience:
Dr Por Yong Ming received his PhD in Melbourne in 1997. Throughout his academic career, he won awards in various fields including those in biochemistry, microbiology, and ophthalmology. After completing basic surgical training in eye care, he traveled to United Kingdom to obtain hands-on surgical experience before returning to Singapore.
Dr Por Yong Ming attended a surgical training course on Ophthalmology at the Singapore Eye Centre. After completing his ophthalmology residency, he completed a corneal and refractive surgery fellowship, during which time he acquired special experience in advanced corneal transplantation, including deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) and Descemets stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) (DSAEK). These innovative strategies enhance outcomes for patients by minimizing rejection rates and, in some cases, enabling recovery of vision in a more rapid manner.
Dr Por Yong Ming has a wide variety of refractive surgery procedures including LASIK and ICL surgery. He applies the ideals of his practice to the treatment of cataracts for his patients, thereby alleviating the need for glasses post-operatively.
Dr Por Yong Ming specializes in both minor and major eye surgery. He is a specialist in measuring the strength of lenses that are implanted in the eye and performs cataract surgery on patients who had LASIK surgery. His cataract patients also had prior ocular procedures such as corneal transplants, retinal surgery, and cataract surgery.
Dr Por Yong Ming is active in his academic career, having written 28 peer reviewed journal articles and authored many book chapters. These also explored in detail both the surgical treatment of cataract and corneal transplantation. He was the chief editor of the Ophthalmic Paramedical and Nursing Handbook, a detailed guide on drugs frequently used by trained medical personnel.
Dr Por is a medical teacher at a medical school, and claims that patient education is essential for effective patient care. To improve patient access and to increase information surrounding the eyes, he blogs and regularly participates in numerous online forums.
