Dr Tan Tiang Hwee Donald is a specialist in ophthalmology and a specialist in Singapore.

Dr Tan Tiang Hwee Donald is a corneal surgeon, specialized in newer methods of transplanting the cornea.

Dr Tan Tiang Hwee Donald ran the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) after its inception, as its Medical Director from 2008 – 2014. He was the director of SERI from 2000 to 2008, and head of the Department of Ophthalmology at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine from 2001 where he is a fully tenured professor.

He is a faculty member of medical school at Duke University and Nanyang Technological University.

In the field of corneal and external diseases, Dr Tan has had over 2 decades of experience in corneal transplantation and corneal refractive surgery.

He has introduced new types of corneal transplantation including deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty, descemets stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty, and descemets membrane endothelial keratoplasty, and has created new surgical instruments for these operations which have transformed the success of corneal transplants.

He has been in charge of the Singapore Eye Bank since 1993.

Dr Tan Tiang Hwee Donald paved the way in the field of ocular surface disease through the creation of the conjunctival autograft technique for pterygium, ocular surface stem cell transplantation, and artificial cornea surgery in the form of the “tooth-in-eye” OOKP (osteo-odonto keratoprosthesis) procedure for the most serious end-stage corneal diseases.

He developed the ReLEx SMILE procedure to reduce the incidence of complications from LASIK surgery for patients with myopia and astigmatism. Dr Tan has developed low-dose atropine eye drops as a way to avoid near-sightedness in young children.

In 2014, Dr Tan was listed as being the third best ophthalmologist in the UK.

Dr Tan Tiang Hwee Donald has participated in educating 32 corneal surgeons over two decades, including 13 surgeons from 13 different countries. He has trained over 70 surgeons in advanced corneal transplantation in SNEC courses, and has been active in the development of newer techniques in corneal transplantation.

As a clinician scientist, Dr Tan is a Principal Investigator (P.I.) in two back-to-back National Research Foundation (NRF) Translational Clinical Research Flagship Grants, which concentrate on cornea, refractive surgery and glaucoma.

Dr Tan is the immediate past chairman of both SERI as well as the National Medical Research Council, with over 350 publications and 12 patents on the subjects of corneal, refractive, and myopia.

Dr Lim is an awardee, including the Minister for Health 2006 Award for Exceptional Results in Public Health, the National Outstanding Clinician Scientist National Medical Excellence Award in 2008, the President’s Science Award in 2009, the SingHealth Excellence Distinguished (Visionary) Leader Award, and the NUS Medical Faculty Research Excellence Award in 2011.

Dr Tan is the founder of the Asia Cornea Society and the chairperson of the Association of Eye Banks of Asia.
