Education & Experience:

In 1997, Dr Ganesh Ramalingam graduated from Singapore National University and completed his post-graduate training and fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. He is currently a consultant general surgeon at Mt Elizabeth Novena, Mt Elizabeth Orchard and Parkway East Hospitals with the G&L Surgical Clinic (Centre of Gastrointestinal and Laparoscopic Surgery), specializing in General Surgery, Bariatric and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery, Endoscopy and Trauma.

Since 2001, Dr Ganesh Ramalingam has founded the Weight Control Centre and Bariatric Surgery at Alexandra Hospital and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, and is currently part of PanAsia Surgery’s Centre for Weight Loss and Metabolic Surgery. He performed several bariatric surgery procedures during this time, including Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, Laparoscopic Roux en Y Gastric Bypass, Laparoscopic Biliopancreatic Diversion and Endoscopically Implanted Intragastric Balloon. He has carried out a number of revisional bariatric procedures and is actively involved in many bariatric research ventures. He is a member of the founding committee of OMSSS (Obesity and Metabolic Surgical Society of Singapore)

Dr Ganesh Ramalingam took part in a one-year trauma internship at Beilinson Hospital, Rabin Medical Center, Petach Tiqva, Israel. He was interested in training paramedics and foreign students in both prehospital and inhospital trauma and critical care, and during activations he was on the roster for the trauma squad. The monthly Trauma Audit lectures were coordinated and delivered and he gave talks at international conferences representing Beilinson Hospital.

He was also actively involved in patient critical care in the separate Intensive Care Units, conducting several bedside procedures such as open abdominal peritoneal washouts and insertion of percutaneous tracheostomy. He has worked in the Beilinson Hospital General Surgery and Bariatric Surgery services, where he was on the active roster for 6 months as the senior surgeon on call.

Dr Ganesh Ramalingam is also an active member of Singapore’s National Trauma Committee. For several years, he has been a teacher for ATLS and DSTC courses. Both Singapore and Israel have received DSTC certification. After its inauguration, the Director of the Trauma Committee and Member of the ICU Committee at the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital have helped develop the Trauma System at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

In teaching, Dr Ganesh has a keen interest. He was part of the Residency Program Faculty and Proctor of Laparoscopic Surgery Fundamentals at the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH). He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of General Surgery at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and was the coordinator of the KTPH General Surgical Department for third-year medical students on rotation.

Dr Ganesh Ramalingam has served as a Commando Medical Officer in the Commando Unit since 1999 during both his National Service and graduated during this time from the Commando Conversion course and the Airbourne course. Dr Ganesh Ramalingam worked as a national serviceman in the active commando unit. He has been very involved in the national soccer scene and has played in the National Football League and represented the Singapore youth team. Currently, he is part of the Singapore Medical Committee Football Association. After the tsunami and Jogjakarta for the earthquake relief mission, Dr Ganesh was on voluntary humanitarian efforts in Banda Aceh and won awards for his participation.

Dr Ganesh Ramalingam has special research interests in Trauma, Critical Care, Advanced Laparoscopy and Bariatrics and has published 13 original papers to date in various peer review journals, along with many oral and poster presentations at conferences around the world.
