Education & Experience:
In 1959, Dr Hong Ga Sze was born in Singapore. He was educated at Singapore’s premier high school, the Raffles College. He went on to study medicine at Singapore’s National University, graduating in 1983 with a Bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery. His surgical training resulted in him becoming a member of Glasgow, Scotland’s Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1988 and a Fellow of Singapore’s Academy of Medicine in 1998.
By then, Dr Hong Ga Sze had acquired an interest in surgical oncology, i.e. surgery for cancer. Dr Hong underwent post-graduate training in surgical oncology in the United Kingdom from 1991 to 1993 under the Human Manpower Development Plan awarded by the Singapore Government. He worked for the Royal Marsden Hospital, London, and Christie Hospital, Manchester, as a senior registrar. Both are top hospitals for UK cancer.
While in London, with a Master of Science in Human Molecular Genetics from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, St Mary’s Hospital, University of London, in 1992, he advanced his expertise and research interests in cancer genetics.
In 1995, Dr Hong Ga Sze was appointed to the Singapore General Hospital as a Surgical Consultant and in 1999 as a Senior Surgical Consultant. In 1999, he became the first full-time surgeon at Singapore’s National Cancer Centre. Through holding the positions of Clinical Coordinator and Director of the Department of Cancer Informatics, he helped establish the National Cancer Centre.
Dr Hong Ga Sze left the Mt Elizabeth Medical Centre in 2001 for private practice. Dr Hong Ga Sze accepted an appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor, National University Hospital Department of Surgery, National University of Singapore in 2001 because of his interests in teaching and science. Dr Hong has been the head of the KK Breast Unit at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Kandang Kerbau since 2005. The unit was founded in June 2005 and is Singapore’s only department dedicated to breast care.
In 2010, Dr Hong Ga Sze was added to the SingHealth Academy’s Attending Faculty, General Surgery, Residency Program. Since 1 December 2003, Dr Hong has been a member of the Investigation Committee and the Disciplinary Committee Panel of the Supreme Court of Singapore.
