Dr Ravishankar K Diddapur practices at Gleneagles Hospital and Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore, as a general surgeon. He specializes in laparoscopic surgery for single incision (SILS) and liver and transplant surgery.
Dr Ravishankar K Diddapur has been extensively trained in the fields of laparoscopic and hepatobiliary surgery and multi-organ transplantation in the United Kingdom (specifically, transplants of the liver, kidney, pancreas and small bowel). He completed his specialty training in general surgery in the UK, with an interest in transplantation as a subspecialist. He was subsequently awarded a fellowship in transplantation from the Royal College of Surgeons and a Hesperis Certificate in transplantation from the European College of Transplantation. To talk about transplants, Dr Ravishankar was featured on BBC Radio.
Dr Ravishankar K Diddapur laparoscopically performs all variations of abdominal surgery in elective and emergency settings. The first single incision of a scarless laparoscopic appendectomy in Southeast Asia was performed by Dr. Ravishankar in 2009. For conditions such as acute appendicitis, hernia repair, gallstone disease, liver resection, liver cyst operation, right hemicolectomy, left hemicolectomy, sigmoid colectomy and subtotal colectomy, Dr Ravishankar continues to provide this rare surgery, both in acute and elective settings, for various conditions including tumours, pancreatic resections, small bowel obstruction, small bowel adhesiolysis.
In 1986, Dr Ravishankar was awarded his medical degree, ranking third in his final examinations at the university, with distinctions in several subjects. He won distinctions and prizes in extracurricular activities during this period, some of which he represented nationally.
For his thesis work, he was awarded the First Prize by Warwick University and received his Masters of Surgery from Bombay University before moving to the UK for higher education. Dr Ravishankar received an award from the Ministry of Health of Singapore for the Health Manpower Development Program (HMDP), which allowed him to further his expertise in right lobe living liver transplantation for donors.
In 2003, Dr Ravishankar was appointed Associate Consultant at the Singapore National University Hospital (NUH) for Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery. He held the title of Senior Clinical Lecturer at NUH at the same time. Shortly afterwards, Dr Ravishankar K Diddapur was elevated to consultant in the same specialty, and for major hepatobiliary procedures, laparoscopic surgery was introduced to NUH.
Singapore’s first laparoscopic liver resection and minimally invasive pancreatic necrosectomy were performed by Dr Ravishankar. At NUH, which has become a renowned independent division at the hospital, he founded and established laparoscopic hepatobiliary surgery.
Dr Ravishankar K Diddapur conducted complex liver transplants and pediatric liver transplants in patients with portal vein thrombosis and hepato-pulmonary syndrome during his consultancy at NUH. On all of his elective surgeries at NUH, he conducted all living donor hepatectomies for liver transplants and held a zero 30-day surgical mortality.
