Dr Shanker Pasupathy practices at Gleneagles Hospital and Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore, as a general surgeon. For obesity and metabolic disorders, for gastroesophageal diseases, such as cancer and acid reflux, and for gallbladder and abdominal hernia, he specialises in keyhole surgery.
Dr Shanker Pasupathy graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery degree from the National University of Singapore. In Singapore, Germany, the United Kingdom and France, he then underwent further training in general, gastrointestinal and vascular surgery. He obtained training in advanced keyhole and robotic surgery during his year-long fellowship at the Research Institute Against Digestive Cancer (IRCAD) and Louis Pasteur University in France.
Dr Shanker Pasupathy was formerly a senior consultant and director of the Singapore General Hospital’s Lifestyle Change and Health Enhancement (LIFE) Center (SGH). The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (removal of a part of the stomach) and laparoscopic gastric bypass were pioneered during his time there (creating a pouch in the stomach). At the Department of Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery in SGH, he also developed the metabolic-bariatric surgery service.
Dr Shanker Pasupathy is the President of the Singapore Society for Obesity and Metabolic Surgery (OMSSS), a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and a member of the Asian Institute of Telesurgery (AITS) Foreign Faculty in Taiwan. Dr Shanker Pasupathy was the former President of the Asian Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons (Singapore Chapter). He has been regularly invited locally and overseas to hold keyhole surgery workshops.
