Dr Tan Poh Choo Mona, a general surgeon with more than 15 years of experience in the field, is currently working at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital outside her clinic. She specializes in surgery for breast protection, which helps women to prevent mastectomy damage or the possible complications of reconstructive surgery.
Dr Tan Poh Choo Mona graduated from the National University of Singapore Faculty of Medicine (MBBS, 1991) and was admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh as a Fellow (FRCS, 1995). Dr Tan completed subspecialty training in breast surgical oncology and endocrine surgery at the New South Wales Breast Cancer Institute and the University of Sydney in 2000, with a particular interest in surgical treatment of breast diseases.
Dr Tan Poh Choo Mona was a consultant at the Department of General Surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital prior to entering private practice. She also served as the Breast Service Head from 2001 to 2003.
Dr Tan Poh Choo Mona continued to push the frontiers of her specialty everywhere she went. She is most recognized in breast conservation surgery for the new techniques she pioneered in sentinel lymph node biopsy, axillary dissection, and oncoplastic procedures. Several globally recognized medical journals, such as The American Journal of Surgery, The Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, have published specific surgical approaches. In addition, she has fine-tuned the surgical techniques currently available that have resulted in positive patient outcomes. In renowned journals such as Lancet Oncology, the Journal of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and The Annals of Surgical Oncology, these improvements have also been published.
Dr Tan Poh Choo Mona is also an invited speaker at numerous local and regional conferences and symposiums due to her extensive expertise of breast conservation surgery. She has also written numerous articles on different subjects related to breast cancer care and treatment.
