At Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore, Dr Hsu Li Fern is a cardiologist and electrophysiologist.
In all general heart disorders, as well as heart rhythm irregularities, including the diagnosis and treatment of atrial fibrillation and flutter and sudden cardiac death, he offers clinical care. This involve conducting procedures such as catheter ablation and pacemaker and defibrillator implantation.
Dr Hsu Li Fern received basic training after graduating from the Faculty of Medicine at the National University of Singapore (MBBS, 1992) and earned his postgraduate degree (MRCP, UK, 1997). He then completed his cardiology Advanced Specialist Training in 2001.
Dr Hsu Li Fern then went on to pursue a two-year fellowship program at the Hospital Cardiologique du Haut-Leveque in Bordeaux, France in 2002, through the Health Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) Award, where he specialized in the management of cardiac arrhythmias. The stint won him the University of Bordeaux Certificate in Specialist Training in Cardiology. In 2005, he was appointed a Fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and the Singapore Academy of Medicine. He was accepted as a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology two years later.
Dr Hsu Li Fern was a senior consultant in the Department of Cardiology at the National Heart Centre, Singapore, prior to his move to private practice. He remains a Visiting Consultant to the Centre as well as to the General Hospital of Changi.
In regional and foreign circles, Dr Hsu’s name is well known. He has been invited by the American College of Cardiology and the Heart Rhythm Society as a faculty for various regional and international scientific meetings, including the scientific sessions. At various regional hospitals, he is also regularly invited to teach and demonstrate catheter ablation and system implantation techniques.
One part of medicine that Dr Hsu sets aside time for is science. He has the admiration of other researchers in the cardiology arena with more than 70 papers published to date in leading international scientific journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine and Circulation. For some of his studies, where he was the Principal Investigator, Dr Hsu also obtained significant research grants. He is also the recipient of the 2005 Myer Sims award for best research publication from the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
Dr Hsu Li Fern has been a manuscript reviewer for many journals, including Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Heart Rhythm, Journal of Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiology, Annals Academy of Medicine Singapore and ASEAN Journal of Cardiology, in recognition of his extensive knowledge and expertise. For his contributions to the Singapore Medical Journal, he was also granted the Reviewer with Distinction Award in 2007 and 2008.
