Education & Experience:

Dr Ooi Yau Wei is a cardiologist who works at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital.
Specializing in interventional cardiology, he has particular interests in complex coronary intervention.

Dr Ooi Yau Wei received his advanced cardiology specialty training at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and subsequently spent a year overseeing Singapore’s largest heart failure program, treating patients with complex end-stage heart failure requiring electrical/mechanical system therapy and heart transplantation assistance.

In 2010, at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, he received a Human Manpower Development Program (HMDP) scholarship from the Ministry of Health, Singapore, for further sub-specialization in interventional cardiology. He spent a year under the mentorship of four prominent interventional cardiology professors and specialists, and was trained in the latest interventional cardiology techniques. With advanced interventional procedures such as rotational atherectomy and coronary imaging, he treated patients with complex coronary lesions and persistent complete occlusions. He was also prepared for severe aortic valve stenosis in carotid and peripheral artery stenting, left atrial appendage closure for stroke prevention and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

Subsequently, he returned to Singapore in 2011, serving as a licensed senior interventional cardiologist, offering TTSH interventional 24-hour acute heart attack service. He has also trained doctors from Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia and Australia in over 10 interventional stenting workshops on advanced interventional techniques.

More than 6,000 invasive coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention procedures have been performed by Dr Ooi, often via the less invasive radial (wrist) method. He has also successfully treated several patients with resistant hypertension through noninvasive renal denervation system therapy. He is a powerful believer in using the radial (wrist) approach to minimally invasive angioplasty (stenting) as it improves patient comfort and protection while reducing complications. He also utilizes the new stent technologies, such as bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (stents that dissolve).

Dr Ooi Yau Wei is currently an assistant adjunct professor at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine and an interventional cardiologist consultant at TTSH. He is also a senior clinical lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS, a cardiology leader at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, a member of the clinical core faculty of the Cardiology Senior Residency Programme of the National Healthcare Association, and an Advanced Cardiac Life Support Teacher.

His other passions, aside from his interest in complex coronary surgery, include sports cardiology. As of 2014, he has been accredited by the American College of Sports Medicine as a clinical sports physiologist. For balanced subjects preparing to perform strenuous and intense exercise, he was invited to give multiple talks on the prevention of sudden cardiac death and risk stratification.

The passion of Dr Ooi Yau Wei in teaching. He continues to cultivate the younger generation of doctors after his transfer to private practice by returning to TTSH regularly to tutor medical undergraduates, junior internal medicine doctors, advanced cardiology trainees, nurses and allied health professionals.

Dr Ooi Yau Wei is also an active participant in clinical research and has been a co-investigator in several international clinical studies. He has written several papers on acute coronary syndrome treatment and coronary stenting, and has been published in many peer-reviewed international journals. As a speaker and faculty teacher, he is also frequently invited to major local and international cardiology conferences.
