Dr Ng Choong Meng Alvin is a physician and endocrinologist at the Medical Centre of Mount Elizabeth, Singapore. He graduated in 1999 from the National University of Singapore (MBBS) Faculty of Medicine. He received his post-graduate qualifications in Internal Medicine (MRCP UK and MMed Internal Medicine, S’pore), Endocrinology Specialist Accreditation, and was subsequently appointed as a fellow of the Singapore Academy of Medicine (FAMS, Endocrinology).
Under the mentorship of Dr Sundeep Khosla, Dr Matthew Drake and Dr Bart Clarke, he was awarded the Health Manpower Development Program (HMDP) fellowship by the Ministry of Health to train in General Endocrinology and Osteoporosis at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester (USA) in 2007. He was one of the leading physicians of the SGH Osteoporosis Clinic on his return to Singapore and during his time at the Singapore General Hospital, treating a wide range of cases including postmenopausal bone loss, male osteoporosis, cancer-induced bone loss, renal bone disease, osteoporosis-induced glucocorticoid (steroid) disease, idiopathic hypercalciuria, metabolic bone disease, pseudohypopopoporosis.
Dr Ng Choong Meng Alvin has a particular interest in obesity and weight loss through lifestyle changes and pharmacological therapies, apart from osteoporosis, and works closely with bariatric surgeons on morbid obesity patients. Dr Ng is well versed in the treatment of diabetes mellitus (type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes mellitus), lipid/cholesterol disorders, thyroid disorders, including the use of thyroid nodular ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA), testosterone deficiency, polycystic ovarian syndrome, hirsutism and gynaecomastia investigations, endocrine triggers of secondary hypertension and pituitary gland He has received consistent accolades for his work, beyond his clinical experience, and his patients speak to him as a patient and loving physician.
Dr Ng Choong Meng Alvin has been invited to speak at local and overseas meetings on a regular basis. He has helped mold future generations of doctors as Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and Clinical Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore. As a visiting consultant to SGH, Dr Ng Choong Meng Alvin continues to be involved in research on the epidemiology of osteoporotic fractures, bisphosphonate-associated atypical subtrochanteric-diaphysal femoral fractures, the relationship between obesity and osteoporosis, vitamin D, and myeloma bone disease.
More recently, the relationship between adipose depots (visceral versus subcutaneous fat) and cardiovascular risk has been the subject of his study.
He is well-published in peer-reviewed journals and has received competitive grants from the Singhealth Foundation, the Singapore Endocrine and Metabolic Society and the National Medical Research Council.
In 2009, he was assigned to the Atypical Femoral Fractures Task Force of the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR). He is a registered member of the institutional review board of Singhealth Centralized and an ex-co-member of the Singapore Osteoporosis Society.
