In India, Dr A K Banerji is regarded as a legend in the field of neurosurgery. He is credited with developing micro neurosurgery in India, standardizing neurosurgical training and evaluation in the region, and helping to develop various neurosurgical subspecialties. He pioneered aneurysm surgery, peripheral nerve surgery, transsphenoidal surgery, and surgery for pineal area tumors, among other treatments.
Prof. Banerji entered the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1965 and was instrumental in establishing the Neurosurgery Department from the ground up. In 1988, he was appointed director of the AIIMS Neurosciences Centre, a role he held until his retirement in 1995.
Dr A K Banerji holds the unusual distinction of being named Emeritus Professor at AIIMS, Delhi, in recognition of his contributions and commitment to the field of neurosurgery. Following his good tenure at AIIMS, he founded VIMHANS (Vidyasagar Institute of Medical Sciences), New Delhi, which was the country’s first private mental health and neurosciences center. Dr. Banerji served as the Director of VIMHANS until 2007 when he joined Apollo Hospital and remains an Emeritus Consultant there. He is the only one who has two orations named after him.
