Education & Experience:
Dr Agasthian T is a general thoracic surgeon specializing in the treatment of various pulmonary diseases, especially lung cancer. For the first lung transplant conducted in Singapore in 2000, he was the lead surgeon. Dr Agasthian is currently training in Singapore at Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
As a general thoracic fellow in the Division of General Thoracic Surgery of the Mayo Clinic and Thoracic Surgery and Transplantation of the Cleveland Clinic, he followed his specialty in general thoracic surgery. Dr Agasthian was appointed as a senior consultant at the National Cancer Centre in Singapore upon his return to Singapore. He has since been assigned to the National Heart Center, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Changi General Hospital, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital as a visiting consultant. He was also the director of the Division of Surgical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute of Singapore just prior to his new private practice at Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
To Dr Agasthian T, education is very important. In Singapore, he established thoracic surgery as a specialty, and trained most thoracic surgeons in Singapore. He was responsible for setting up thoracic surgery facilities at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, National Cancer Center, National Heart Center, and at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital for pediatric thoracic surgery. Dr Agasthian has been teaching all advanced cardiothoracic trainees in Singapore since 1996. It also developed a regional center of excellence for advanced thoracic training for physicians and fellows from the region, including India, Pakistan, China and Malaysia.
Dr Agasthian T is a member of the Asian Surgical Society and the Singapore Thoracic Society. He is also an adviser and founding board member of the Asian Thoracoscopic Surgery Education Program. He is the assistant editor for the Journal of Thoracic Diseases, and also serves as a reviewer for the European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Asian Annals of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Annals of Medicine Singapore and Singapore Medical Journal. He has written more than 50 papers in scholarly journals and has been invited as a speaker to several regional and international conferences and seminars.
Dr Agasthian T specializes in general thoracic non-cardiac surgery. Procedures he performed include benign and malignant lung surgery, pleural and mediastinal disorders, minimally invasive thoracic surgery (VATS), pulmonary metastatectomy, oesophageal surgery for benign and malignant cancers, tracheal and airway cancer and benign stricture surgery, lung transplantation, and thymectomy and tumor robotic thoracic surgery.
