- Dr Atheeswar Das, consultant ophthalmologist at Medicare Eye Clinic and Apollo Specialty Hospitals, is an example of an achiever who exemplifies this adage through his career trajectory. He graduated with honors from MBBS in 2000 and was awarded the IMA’s Dr. Chandra Bose gold medal for ranking first in clinical medicine in the state of Tamil Nadu (Indian Medical Association). In 2006, he completed his postgraduate training in ophthalmology at the world-famous Aravind Eye Care System. In 2006, he was named the graduating student of his class at Aravind Eye Hospital and Postgraduate Training Institute. In 2005 and 2007, he completed the world council of ophthalmology assessment examinations. He was renowned as a cataract surgeon with a high volume of cases at Aravind Eye Care System. He earned his FRCS (Glasgow, Scotland) and is a renowned phaco surgeon, having performed over 25000 cataract procedures. He was the phaco trainer at Aravind Eye Hospital and played a critical role in establishing the phaco-wet lab and educating doctors from Bangladesh, China, and Thailand. He did a residency in vitreo-retinal surgery at Chennai’s Sankara Nethralaya. Dr Atheeswar Das is one of the few comprehensive ophthalmic surgeons in the world capable of doing phacoemulsification, LASIK, and vitreoretinal surgery.
