Dr Chua Soo Yeng Benjamin practices at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore, and is a vascular and endovascular surgeon. He specializes in the treatment and control of all vascular disorders, such as aortic aneurysms, peripheral arterial disease, salvage of the diabetic limb, varicose veins and venous disease, prevention of carotid diseases/stroke, access to renal dialysis, vascular malformations and chronic care of wounds.
He is currently the Vascular & Interventional Centre’s Medical Director and Senior Specialist Vascular Surgeon. In the management of all vascular disorders, Dr Chua has several years of specialist experience. Dr Chua was instrumental in setting up the Department of Vascular Surgery at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH), the first island-wide independent clinical department dedicated to caring for patients with vascular disorders, before setting up the Vascular & Interventional Centre. The department expanded to a team of nine vascular surgeons and six vascular technologists under his leadership, who worked closely with specialized wound care nurses and podiatrists.
More than 10,000 outpatients were cared for by the department and more than 5,000 vascular ultrasound scans and 2000 surgeries were performed each year. Dr Chua was also instrumental in promoting the use of minimally invasive endovascular surgical procedures during his time at SGH. He also helped to pioneer new techniques for aortic aneurysm repair, peripheral arterial disease angioplasty and stenting, and varicose vein surgery.
Dr Chua Soo Yeng Benjamin also worked as the Director of the Alexander Chao Vascular and Endovascular Surgical Skills Platform under the Surgery Surgical Skills Centre Division while at SGH. Dr Chua Soo Yeng Benjamin was also the Deputy Director of Singhealth’s Device Production Office, Academic Clinical Program in Surgery. He also chaired the Division of Surgery’s Evidence-Based Medicine Committee at SGH. He continues to serve as a SingHealth Centralized Institute Review Board Alternate Member. Dr. Chua continues to hold his academic position at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Surgery. He has also served as the Vascular Surgical Society’s Honorary Treasurer since 2006. (Singapore).
In 2000, Dr Chua Soo Yeng Benjamin graduated from the National University of Singapore with an MBBS degree. In 2001, in order to join the Clinical Research Training Program at Duke University of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina, he received the prestigious Singapore National Medical Research Council (NMRC) Fellowship Training Grant. While at Duke, he also worked as a research fellow at the Duke Clinical Research Institute, focusing his research on dialysis-dependent populations of lower limb peripheral vascular disease, as well as on the production of randomized surgical trials. In 2003, Dr. Chua received his MHSc in Clinic Research from the University of Duke.
Dr Chua Soo Yeng Benjamin was elected to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2005 and to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2008 as a Fellow. The following year, the National Health Group and the Ministry of Health, Singapore, awarded Dr Chua the coveted Higher Manpower Development Program (HMDP) prize. As part of this award, from 2009 to 2010, Dr Chua served as the Honorary Vascular Surgery Clinical Fellow in Advanced Endovascular Surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital and Epworth Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. He studied during this period under the personal tutelage of University of Melbourne Professor Michael Denton, a renowned expert in advanced aortic stent grafts, fenestrated devices and peripheral interventions.
Dr Chua is considered one of Asia’s leading vascular surgeons and travels widely in the Asia Pacific region to teach and provide complicated aortic stenting, peripheral vascular procedures, and endovenous surgery. He is also invited on a regular basis to sit on the faculty and talk at various regional and international vascular conferences.
Dr Chua Soo Yeng Benjamin is also actively engaged in vascular system development and research in his efforts to improve clinical treatment for patients with vascular diseases. In addition to holding patents and invention disclosures for innovative vascular surgery products, he has received several grants from A*STAR and SMART amounting to more than S$5 million.
Through the Vascular and Interventional Centre, Dr Chua aims to provide patients with vascular disorders with the best personalized treatment and expert specialist management.
