- Dr Desmond Quek is a Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist at Eagle Eye Centre and the Director of Glaucoma Services. He is board-certified in glaucoma, cataracts, refractive defects (myopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia), as well as general ophthalmological disorders such as diabetic eye disease, age-related macular degeneration, and dry eyes.
- Dr Desmond Quek graduated from the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Faculty of Medicine in 2001, where he was a recipient of the NUS Undergraduate Scholarship and the Dean’s List Award for academic distinction. He then completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) on a Ministry of Health Postgraduate Scholarship, and was elected a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2008 and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2011. He is also a fellow of the Singapore Academy of Medicine (2011). He then completed a subspecialty residency in glaucoma at SNEC before enrolling in an executive MBA program at INSEAD in 2013.
- Dr Desmond Quek held various leadership positions at SNEC before to joining Eagle Eye Centre, including Chief Resident, Chief Registrar, Director of Medical Informatics, Chair of the Information Technology Committee, and Director of Strategy and Resource Management. He was also a Principal Investigator in a number of research trials, including the relationship with obstructive sleep apnoea and glaucoma, the Asia tube vs. trabeculectomy surgical study, and the delivery of sustained-release ocular pressure reducing medication by a microstent injection. He is the first author of a number of peer-reviewed journal articles and has presented his research at various international eye conferences.
- His clinical interests at the moment are mostly glaucoma, cataract, and refractive surgery. These include laser glaucoma treatment, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), trabeculectomy and tube shunt surgery, phacoemulsification and femtosecond laser cataract surgery, multifocal and toric lens implantation for myopia, presbyopia, and astigmatism correction, and LASIK.
- Dr Quek is an advocate for a healthy work-life balance. Despite his tight schedule, he finds time to swim and work out daily, and eats hawker cuisine sparingly. He is fluent in English, Mandarin, and Teochew and is currently attempting to learn Japanese conversationally.
