Biodata
- Dr Fong Sau Shung is a general surgeon with an interest in colorectal surgery as a specialization. He graduated from the National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Medicine in 2001, earned a postgraduate Master of Medicine degree in 2007, was admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2007, and was admitted to the Singapore registry of specialists in 2011. He has since completed a fellowship with Professor Peter Sagar in Leeds, United Kingdom, in 2013 as part of the hospital manpower development program for the treatment of advanced and recurring colorectal cancer.
- Dr Fong Sau Shung served a variety of posts both within and outside of Tan Tock Seng Hospital prior to joining Raffles Hospital (TTSH). He served as the Chief of the Colorectal Service (2017–2019) and Director of the Endoscopy Center throughout his employment at TTSH (2016-2019). He served as Honorary Secretary of the Singapore Society of Colorectal Surgeons (2015-2017). He is also a founder member of the Singapore Robotic Society. Dr Fong is passionate about quality improvement initiatives and served as the clinical lead for the TTSH’s ‘Better Colonoscopy’ and ‘Better Colectomy’ programs, both of which were based on the Geisinger ‘Provencare’ approach, as well as the co-clinical lead for the TTSH’s enhanced recovery after surgery initiative in 2017.
- Dr Fong’s principal area of expertise is minimally invasive surgery, including robotic surgery and sophisticated transanal endoscopic procedures. He specializes in minimally invasive lateral pelvic lymph node dissection for rectal cancer patients with affected internal iliac lymph nodes. He has also acted as a proctor in Singapore for the technique of transanal complete mesorectal excision and in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, for robotic rectal cancer resection. He is a proponent of colon cancer stenting as a bridge to surgery in patients with colon cancer.
