Professional Statement
Dr John, MD, PhD’s research focuses on improving the management of patients with gout and other forms of crystalline arthritis, including CPPD illness. He is the principal author of the American College of Rheumatology Gout Guidelines and Gout Quality Improvement Measures.
Dr FitzGerald, in collaboration with the Gao lab at CalTech, is investigating a skin patch sensor that will continuously detect uric acid levels in a patient’s perspiration and communicate pre- and post-meal data to their mobile phone.
Dr FitzGerald, in collaboration with the Ozcan laboratory, has submitted a patent application for a lens-free polarized microscope that can distinguish between gout (monosodium urate – MSU) and pseudogout (calcium pyrophosphate – CPP) crystals.
Dr FitzGerald is researching the association between gout and cholesterol and its effect on atherosclerosis.
Dr FitzGerald is also interested in studies pertaining to Quality of Care and patient outcomes. He has investigated the influence of Rheumatology physician supply on patient care, hospital surgical volume on patient outcomes, and patient quality of life after joint replacement surgery. Additionally, Dr. FitzGerald undertakes policy research.
