Dr Joy Varghese is a visiting consultant hepatologist and liver transplant physician, as well as a member of the teaching staff of the Govt. General Hospital in Chennai’s Department of Hepatology and the Govt. Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai’s Institute of Liver Transplantation.
He was instrumental in the establishment of cadaver liver transplant programs in both government and non-government institutions in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
He works as an examiner for the National Board of Examiners (Gastroenterology – Speciality). He has produced book chapters and published over 60 research publications in the field of hepatology/liver transplantation in indexed journals. He is a member of the editorial boards of the World Journal of Hepatology and the Global Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, as well as a reviewer for a number of international and national journals.
For three years, he was the Programme Director for the Fellowship in Hepatology course at Gleneagles Global Health City in Chennai, India, which is affiliated with The Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University.
At the University Hospital in Essen, Germany, he got a fellowship in transplant hepatology. He previously worked as an assistant professor at Kochi’s Amirta Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre. He then worked as a Consultant Hepatologist and Liver Transplant Physician at Global Hospital & Health City in Chennai, where he was intimately involved in the peri-operative and long-term management of over 600 adult liver transplants (cadaver and living donor).
Dr Joy Varghese has extensive experience managing both medical and surgical patients in the liver intensive care unit (Liver ICU). He is one of the world’s few pioneers in the use of therapeutic plasma exchange in the treatment of liver disease.
