Experience
- Dr Lo Ngai Nung is an orthopaedic surgeon at Singapore’s Gleneagles Hospital.
His specialties include the treatment of complex degenerative hip and knee joint disorders.
His research priorities include minimally invasive joint replacements and partial knee replacements, as well as accelerated rehabilitation programs for early return to work following joint replacement surgery. - Dr Lo Ngai Nung has over 25 years of experience treating degenerative hip and knee joints that are symptomatic. He conducts approximately 450 joint replacement surgeries each year, the majority of which are complex cases or revision surgeries referred for further care.
Dr Lo Ngai Nung was named head of the adult reconstruction service of the Singapore General Hospital’s department of orthopaedic surgery in 1995.
He served as a visiting professor of orthopaedics at China’s Ningxia Medical College and as an emeritus specialist in orthopaedics at Shandong’s Liaocheng People’s Hospital. Additionally, he is an assistant professor of orthopaedics at Duke-NUS Medical School and an associate professor of medicine at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He is also an instructor for the National University of Singapore’s Master of Medicine (Orthopaedics) program and the Thai Hip and Knee Society fellowship exams.
He is a member of the ASEAN Arthroplasty Association and the Asia-Pacific Arthroplasty Society’s teaching faculty.
Dr Lo Ngai Nung has been a featured speaker at international conferences such as the World Arthroplasty Congress in Rome and regularly teaches surgical courses and masterclasses in hip and knee replacement surgery throughout Asia and the Pacific.
He has over 150 peer-reviewed publications and is the co-editor of two textbooks on arthroplasty.
In 2005, he established the Singapore International Foundation’s Vietnam arthroplasty surgeon training project, which enlisted the assistance of volunteer physicians, scrub nurses, and physiotherapists. In a related curriculum, he performed surgery and taught orthopaedic surgeons in Myanmar.
Dr Lo Ngai Nung was instrumental in developing the implants and instruments used in minimally invasive knee replacement procedures that are now widely used worldwide. He was also a principal investigator in multicenter trials evaluating experimental hip and knee implants, as well as trials evaluating anti-deep vein thrombosis medications. He is currently working on the development of an improved-stability hip prosthesis.
He has won several distinctions, including the 2002–2004 NUS Excellence in Orthopaedic Teaching Award, the 2004 SGH CEO’s Service Quality Award, and the 2019 Heart of Gold Award.
Dr Lo was presented with the Long Service Medal (Pingat Bakti Setia) at the Singapore National Day Awards in 2013 for his 25 years of public service.
