Professional Statement
The Prostate Cancer Foundation has presented the 2017 VALOR Young Investigator Award to Dr Nicholas, an assistant professor of radiation oncology at the David School of Medicine at UCLA and an attending physician at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The $225,000 funding will further his investigation into the biochemical factors behind the incurable spread of prostate cancer.
Nickols, a member of the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, is conducting a trial combining surgery, stereotactic radiotherapy, and enhanced hormonal therapy in men with oligometastatic prostate cancer. Oligometastatic prostate cancer is a condition in which the prostate cancer has five or fewer metastases. He expects that his study may lead to the discovery of novel strategies to detect, cure, and prevent metastasis in prostate and other cancers, as well as the identification of important characteristics of potentially fatal original prostate tumors.
Dr Nicholas is linked with a number of regional institutions, including UCLA Medical Center and Veterans Administration Greater Los Angeles Healthcare Medical Center. He has been in profession for eleven to twenty years.
