Dr Ong Kong Wee is a general surgeon who works at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital.
Dr Ong Kong Wee primary clinical focus is on the diagnosis and treatment of breast disorders that are benign and malignant. Sentinel lymph node biopsy, breast conservation surgery, and breast reconstruction for breast cancer are his clinical interests.
From 2014-2018, Dr Ong was the founding director of the SingHealth Duke-NUS Breast Centre.
Dr Ong Kong Wee pioneered the intraoperative radiotherapy method in the treatment of early breast cancer in 2012. He was named Director of Resident and Student Mentorship at SingHealth’s Surgery Academic Clinical Program in the same year to encourage research among young aspiring surgeons.
In 2018, in the field of minimally invasive breast biopsies such as vacuum-assisted needle biopsy and hookwire localisation, he was also appointed as a regional medical consultant to Becton, Dickinson and Company.
Dr Ong Kong Wee has a deep interest in research on breast cancer and has been published in leading journals such as Nature Genetics, Clinical Cancer Research, and The Lancet Oncology.
At Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, Dr. Ong was an adjunct assistant professor.
For the SingHealth General Surgery Residency program, he was also a clinical surgeon faculty, and was awarded the Outstanding Faculty Award in 2014. He speaks regularly at conferences on breast cancer and conducts surgical seminars in the field.
Dr Ong Kong Wee has won many honors, including SingHealth’s 20-year Long Service Award in 2018.
