Education & Experience:
Dr Ranjiv Sivanandan is a Qualified General Surgeon of the Specialty Board who has dedicated his career to the practice and growth of thyroid and head & neck surgery. In 1991, he graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery and was awarded a
Fellowship in 1997 to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and a Masters of Medicine (Surgery). At the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Stanford University, California, USA, he received his advanced training in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology. Upon completion of the fully accredited program, he was awarded a fellowship with the American Head and Neck Society, and was named full-time professor and assistant professor of surgery at the Department of Otolaryngology – Heaven Society.
In scientific research and clinical teaching, Dr Ranjiv was extensively involved. He led studies at the Stanford Institute of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine on squamous head and neck cancers, and was the first in the world to publish Stem Cells for Head and Neck Cancer in 2007. The Resident Teaching Award for the most outstanding contribution to the Stanford University Residency Program was twice awarded to him.
Dr Ranjiv Sivanandan was Senior Consultant and Chief of the Head and Neck Service at the Department of Surgery, Singapore General Hospital (SGH) prior to establishing his private practice, overseeing the largest number of thyroid, parathyroid, parotid and major head and neck surgeries conducted in Singapore. He co-founded the Thyroid Community, which created, formalized and adopted SGH’s
Institutional Guidelines for the Treatment of Thyroid Cancer, and served as its President from 2007 to 2009. At the National Cancer Center, he was also Principal Investigator at the Head and Neck Cancer Research Laboratory. Dr Ranjiv Sivanandan is an SGH Visiting Consultant and Adj A/Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Singapore National University, where he continues to be involved in the area of undergraduate and postgraduate education and training. He has also been Vice-President of the General Surgeons Chapter of Singapore since 2011. The three-time winner of the Singapore General Hospital Service Efficiency Award was Dr Ranjiv.
Dr Ranjiv Sivanandan has a strong interest in the application of robotics in head and neck surgery, in addition to the various thyroid, parathyroid, parotid and major head and neck surgeries that he conducts every year. Dr Ranjiv conducted Singapore’s first robotic thyroidectomy in May 2010 and Southeast Asia’s first robotic neck dissection in July 2011. These innovative techniques use state-of-the-art robotic technologies to remove, without any neck or visible incision, the thyroid gland and cancerous lymph nodes in the neck.
On a personal level, Dr Ranjiv Sivanandan strongly believes that each condition is special to the individual, that every patient is aware of best practices and treatment options based on evidence, and that patients are fully engaged in the decision-making process. He is personally committed to treating the client, not just the illness, and to providing each patient in his care with the best clinical treatment and outcome.
