Biodata

  • Dr Rupesh Agrawal is a Senior Consultant – Clinician Scientist at the National Healthcare Group’s Tan Tock Seng Hospital Eye Institute.
  • After finishing his residency and fellowship in uveitis and ocular trauma at Sankara Netralaya in Chennai (1999-03), he taught at Shri Ganapati Netralaya in Jalna (2003-08) and the L V Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, India (2008-09). After being awarded the NMRC foreign research training fellowship, he spent time at Moorfields Eye Hospital (MEH) in London with Prof Carlos Pavesio and finished his MD (Res) training fellowship at the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London (UCL) (Nov’12 – Oct’14). He is now a Research Associate at the Institute of Ophthalmology and an Honorary Consultant at MEH. His clinical interests include inflammatory illnesses of the eye (uveitis), including ocular tuberculosis and HIV, as well as ocular trauma.
  • Dr Rupesh Agrawal has numerous peer-reviewed publications and has presented numerous papers and presentations on uveitis and ocular trauma. He has received multiple funding for initiatives involving basic-translational science and ocular inflammation and medication delivery. As a Clinician Investigator, he is affiliated with the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI), the School of Material Science and Engineering (MSE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB), A*Star, Singapore, and the National University of Singapore (NUS).
  • His primary research interests include the following:
  • The development of medications with a sustained release mechanism for the back of the eye.
  • Biomarkers for ocular inflammation that are novel.
  • Characterizing the activity of red blood cells and its implications for diabetic retinopathy.
  • He was the first to publish choroidal vascular imaging using an index: Indicator of choroidal vascularity
  • Dr Rupesh Agrawal is currently the International Society of Ocular Trauma’s secretary. He was presented with the Healthcare Humanity Award by Singapore’s President (2011) in recognition of his humanitarian efforts. He is extensively interested in charitable endeavors throughout Asia. He is also an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians in Glasgow, United Kingdom.
