- Dr Shim Hang Hock is a gastroenterologist with a particular interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (i.e. ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease) and screening for digestive cancers. He previously practiced clinical gastroenterology and general hepatology at Singapore General Hospital, where he served as Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center, and is still a Visiting Consultant there. Dr Shim is an enthusiastic educator who was recently named Adjunct Assistant Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School.
- Dr Shim Hang Hock earned his Bachelor of Medicine (BM) in 2007 from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom and was certified as a gastrointestinal specialist in 2015. In 2016, he was awarded a Healthcare Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) scholarship by the Ministry of Health, Singapore, to pursue an Advanced Fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease under the mentorship of Professors Remo Panaccione and Cynthia Seow in Calgary, Canada, home to one of the world’s largest inflammatory bowel disease units.
- Dr Shim Hang Hock has authored multiple peer-reviewed articles and book chapters that have been published in prestigious medical journals. He has also served as an invited peer reviewer for medical publications and has been a key participant in a number of clinical trials. These accomplishments demonstrate his professional skill in the field of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, particularly in the management of patients with difficult disease, the use of innovative medicines, and IBD pregnancy. Dr Shim serves on medical advisory boards and is a frequent faculty/speaker at local and regional medical conferences. During his tenure at Singapore General Hospital, he was a vital part of the small bowel endoscopy service and also contributed to the colorectal cancer screening service.
- Dr Shim is fluent in English, Chinese, Malay, Indonesian, and a variety of dialects, including Cantonese, Teochew, and Hakka. He is a firm believer in holistic, patient-centered treatment and has received numerous service-related honors for his dedication to patient care and service excellence.
