Experience

  • Dr Tan Min Han is a clinical cancer geneticist who specializes in precision oncology. As a dual-trained cancer specialist in clinical cancer genetics and medical oncology, he counsels physicians and patients on how to integrate genetics into cancer treatment. At his laboratory, he also offers specialized genetic therapy for risk assessment and drug selection.
Dr Tan’s research has spanned the fields of cancer treatment, laboratory biology, nanomedicine, and medical data analytics, often rewriting conventional wisdom and advancing patient care. He has written over 100 peer-reviewed original articles on cancers of the breast, lung, gastrointestinal tract, liver, prostate, kidney, and head and neck. He has won international research awards from technical societies in the United States and Europe (ASCO and ESMO), as well as regional ASEAN awards for excellence.
Among his accomplishments, he is globally renowned for identifying the circulating tumor-endothelial cluster in cancer patients’ blood as a non-invasive marker of cancer. His service laboratory, which has filed several patents in the fields of liquid biopsies and companion diagnostics, focuses on improved blood testing technology for quicker and more precise cancer detection and monitoring. Lucence’s improved liquid biopsy technology is available to all clinicians for cancer screening and monitoring, with a focus on lung, nose/nasopharyngeal, and gastrointestinal cancers. His work on the adverse effects of cancer drugs is also well-known, as he was the first to create a human stem cell model for drug-induced liver damage.
  • As a cancer geneticist, Dr Tan Min Han is best known for co-establishing international diagnostic criteria and lifelong cancer risks for Cowden syndrome, an inherited breast cancer syndrome, at the Cleveland Clinic with Prof Charis Eng. He sees patients for cancer risk assessment and is continuing to work with colleagues in the public and private sectors to discover new genes in the Asian community. He oversaw the review of the Singapore Breast Cancer Screening Programme, which included over 160,000 women followed for a period of 20 years and included a thorough examination of risk factors.
Dr Tan Min Han remains involved in public service, serving as co-chairman of the Ministry of Health’s Advisory Committee on Genetic Testing. Between 2014 and 2016, he served as the lead editor of the Singapore Cancer Network, which established national cancer management guidelines.
