Biodata
- Dr Tan Yu Meng is a hepatobiliary and cancer surgeon at FeM Surgery. He earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery with First Class Honors and Distinction from the Charing Cross & Westiminster Medical School (now Imperial College of Medicine) at the University of London in 1994. He then completed a general surgery residency at Singapore General Hospital under the tutelage of Professor Soo Khee Chee and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1999.
- Dr Tan Yu Meng joined the National Cancer Centre’s department of surgical oncology as a consultant in 2003, with a focus in gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary-pancreatic (GI-HPB) surgery and cancer treatment. He received additional training in advanced HPB surgery and liver transplantation at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s Liver Unit. He then advanced his abilities in living donor liver transplantation in Japan under the supervision of Professor K Tanaka.
- Dr Tan Yu Meng was a founding member of the Singapore General Hospital’s liver transplant program in 2005. In 2007, he was named Deputy Head and Senior Consultant of the Department of Surgical Oncology at Singapore’s National Cancer Centre, as well as Surgical Director of the SGH’s Liver Transplantation Program. During this time period, he headed the team that successfully performed the first split liver transplant at SGH and Asia’s first combination heart-liver transplant in 2009.
- His surgical interests include the management of peritoneal surface cancers, and he led a multidisciplinary team from NCC to Washington Cancer Institute in 2009 in adopting Dr Paul Sugarbaker’s peritonectomy and HIPEC (Sugarbaker procedure) procedures and protocols. Dr Tan is one of the few surgeons in Asia who specializes in peritoneal cancers.
