Dr Teoh Charn Beng Stephen is a consultant ophthalmologist with expertise in surgical retina, macular hole surgery, diabetic vitrectomy, diagnostic vitrectomy and other vitrectomies (including management of age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular disorders, diabetic retinopathy etc). He is highly qualified in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular inflammatory diseases like uveitis and ocular tear duct inflammation.
Dr Teoh Charn Beng Stephen received his undergraduate degrees from NUS and completed his training to become an ophthalmologist at NUS and a fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Academy of Medicine in Singapore. He received both surgical and medical subspecialty training in vitreoretina (surgical and medical) and uveitis, ocular immunology and inflammation before becoming an HMDP fellow. He had an additional clinical follow-up test assessing his ocular wellbeing in HIV-related ocular inflammation at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.
Dr Teoh Charn Beng Stephen is a knowledgeable specialist in cataract surgeries, refractive surgery with wavefront, toric and multifocal IOLs, and pterygium excision with conjunctival strip graft (fibrin glue). He remains a professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and at the Singapore Communicable Disease Centre (CDC). Dr Teoh has also worked as an Ophthalmic advisor and teacher to the HIV/AIDS Initiative at Harvard Medical School for the CMV Retinitis project since May 2009.
Dr Teoh Charn Beng Stephen is a Senior Consultant at the National Healthcare Group Eye Institute and a Research Scientist at the National Healthcare Group Institute of Uveitis at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He has been invited to speak at several national conferences and has many publications in nationally-ranked academic journals. He has accepted countless peer-reviewed articles for journals, and has reviewed articles for several journals.
He is involved in HIV diseases of the skin, and infectious uveitis. Besides holding various national and local grants worth over S$2 million, he also participates in numerous pharmaceutical trials and joint clinical research with A*Star, SERI and other restructured hospitals in Singapore. He is active on numerous research committees in NHG, and he sits on the NHG Domain Specific Review Board’s research ethics committee.
He has a doctorate in ophthalmology and is a clinical senior professor for the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore and a clinical professor at the University of Manchester-Singapore Polytechnic Optometry Degree Programme. He frequently offers lectures on current issues at public symposia, at nursing workers at the Nanyang Polytechnic and at Ophthalmology National Continuing Medical Education lectures to residents, trainees and peers. He has supervised and educated a diverse community of vitreoretinal fellows.
