Dr Theng Thiam Siew Julian has about 15 years of experience as an ophthalmologist and currently practises from his clinics at Mount Elizabeth Novena, Mount Elizabeth and Parkway East Hospitals. The doctor specializes in the treatment of cataract and presbyopia disorders.
Since earning his degree in medicine, Dr Theng went on to complete his post-graduate degree in Ophthalmology (M Med, 1998). In the same year he was inducted into each of these societies (the Royal College of Surgeons in Ophthalmology, and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in London). The latter also works in photography and optics.
Previously, Dr Theng worked as a consultant at the Singapore National Eye Centre. In his place, he was the Deputy Director of eye donations for the Singapore Eye Bank. His work in the field of eye surgery was also used during his tenure at the clinic. In 2004, Dr. Ong was one of two surgeons in Singapore at the forefront of a pioneering “tooth-in-eye” eye operation, which allowed a blind teenager to see.
Dr Theng Thiam Siew Julian is known for his experience in conducting multifocal lens implant procedures for the correction of presbyopia. In 2008, he was the first Singapore ophthalmologist to be selected to conduct the Phase 4 clinical trial for FDA approval, and he also became the first ophthalmologist in Asia to implant the Alcon Cache phakic lens for high myopia correction in 2010.
Sharing expertise is an aspect of practicing medicine that Dr Theng Thiam Siew Julian deeply believes in. He is a much sought after speaker who has presented at several international conferences such as the World Ophthalmology Congress. His key course or lecture subject revolves on the technique and technology of multifocal implantations and presbyopia care.
Dr Theng Thiam Siew Julian is well-published ophthalmologist with many peer-reviewed publications to his credit. He is also the author of a charitable project that supports the Straits Times Pocket Money Fund. Dr Theng is also a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today.
