Education & Experience:

Dr Thng Leong Keng Paul works at Mount Elizabeth Hospital as an orthopaedic surgeon. Dr Thng is a specialist in cervical and spinal surgery.

Dr Thng Leong Keng Paul was the only one out of eight students in his medical class to earn a prestigious local merit scholarship from the Singapore Public Service Commission (PSC) to study medicine at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Dr Thng was awarded his 1st Health Manpower Development Program (HMDP) fellowship from the Ministry of Health (MOH) Singapore in 1994 after graduating from NUS and subsequently received his fellowship at both the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Dr Thng pursued his sub-speciality in the spine after completing his orthopaedic surgery studies. He was awarded his 2nd MOH HMDP to spend a year at the University of Calgary studying spine surgery, and his 3rd HMDP for a one-month fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University in Boston, USA.

Since 2001, Dr Thng has worked as an orthopaedic surgeon. In Changi General Hospital, he set up the spine service (CGH). Dr Thng has conducted over 3,000 operations and over 1,200 spine procedures, both open and minimally invasive, based on hospital OTM reports from 2003-2013. From June 2010 to June 2012, an internal audit for geriatric patients showed that Dr Thng conducted 85 spine operations (70-91 years of age) with outcome scores consistent with international standards.

In China, India, Vietnam and Malaysia, Dr Thng has been invited to hold live demonstrations of spine surgical and operative skills. Some of the procedures seen include minimally invasive spinal surgery, arthroplasty of the cervical disc, posterior cervical and lumbar surgery, and thoracolumbar anterior surgery.

The work of Dr Thng has been appreciated both globally and locally by his fellow surgeons. He has been invited to conduct faculty teaching on more than 50 occasions over the last 10 years. For both international and regional spine societies, orthopaedic and neurosurgical organisations and colleges, he has also been named chairperson more than 10 times.

From 2007 to 2010, Dr Thng Leong Keng Paul was elected by fellow surgeons in the region to chair AOSpine East Asia, an international group of spine surgeons supporting research and advancement of spine treatment. He has also served as AOSpine Asia Pacific’s incumbent chairman since 2013. In addition to this, from 2008-2013, Dr Thng was also named visiting consultant to the Guikang National People’s Hospital in Guikang China.

Dr Thng Leong Keng Paul was a senior orthopaedic surgeon consultant at Changi General Hospital (CGH) and an adjunct associate professor at Singapore National University (NUS). He was also the director of the spine fellowship at CGH, responsible for training spine fellows from countries around the country, including China, India and Southeast Asia (2004-2013).

Dr Thng Leong Keng Paul has been actively involved in teaching undergraduate and orthopaedic residency, and has been named as an examiner for both the MBBS exams and the orthopaedic fellowship specialist exit exams conducted jointly with the Edinburgh Royal College of Surgeons. As an external examiner for these joint exams, he was invited to Hong Kong University in 2015. From 2013 to 2015, he also acted as a visiting consultant for the Singapore Armed Forces.

Research-wise, Dr Thng Leong Keng Paul serves as the Global Spine Journal’s associate editor. He also reviews scientific articles from the Medical Journal of Singapore and the Academy’s Annals. In Spine Surgery, he has contributed a book chapter on Osteoporosis and Obesity.

Dr Thng Leong Keng Paul has been awarded several prizes for all his efforts and accomplishments. Internationally, in 2013, he won AOSpine International’s Best Educational Achievement in Asia Pacific award. Other awards include the 2010 Singapore Health Quality Service (Gold) award, the 2011 CGH/EHA

Quality Convention award, the 2012 Singhealth Quality Service (Star) award, and numerous CGH awards for best service on a quarterly basis.
