Education & Experience:

After being awarded the Singapore Government Public Service Commission ASEAN Scholarship, Dr Toh came to Singapore in 1978 to study at the National Junior College. He was awarded the Singapore Government Public Service Commission Merit Scholarship after his Junior College to study Medicine at the National University of Singapore. In 1985, he earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees. He went on to gain both the Masters of Medicine (Surgery) and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Fellowship.

Dr Toh Choon Lai enrolled in the position of specialist (orthopaedic surgery) after completing his advanced training in orthopaedic surgery and is a Fellow of the Singapore Academy of Medicine. Dr Toh has a special interest in Trauma and Trauma Repair, Joint Reconstruction/Replacement, Upper Extremity Surgery and Ilizarov Surgery, in addition to being qualified as an Orthopaedic Surgeon.

For additional training in Orthopaedic Trauma in the USA, he won the Singapore Government Health Manpower Growth Plan Scholarship. At the world-renowned Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, he was named a fellow in orthopaedic trauma (USA).
Prior to his current position as senior partner in Orthopaedic Associates, which is one of the first private practice party at Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Dr Toh was Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Deputy Head in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

In local and international journals, Dr Toh Choon Lai has also published and co-authored various publications. He has written chapters in many books, including the Limb Replantation chapter in Chant and Barros D’Sa’s “Emergency Vascular Practice edited by Chant and Barros D’Sa” and the Wrist Fractures chapter in J Herndon’s “Surgical Reconstruction of the Upper Extremity edited by J Herndon”

Dr Toh Choon Lai also retains an active interest in teaching Orthopaedic Surgery, despite his busy schedule. He frequently sits on several committees and talks to fellow orthopaedic surgeons, physicians and members of the public in the city. He is also the Singapore Medical Association’s Vice President. In his spare time, he also plays golf and tennis.

Since the year 2000, Dr Toh Choon Lai has been in private practice. They do general orthopaedics and also have particular interest and experience in orthopaedic subspecialties such as orthopaedic trauma, adult rehabilitation and joint replacement surgery, spinal surgery, upper extremity surgery and arthroscopy, along with their other colleagues in Orthopaedic Associates.

The main practice is based at the Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre, and all of Singapore’s major private hospitals are accredited.
