Professional Statement
In the last five years, Dr Ujwal has amassed a plethora of expertise in Neurosurgery. In 2013, he started his career in Neurosurgery as a senior resident at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, where he oversaw OPD, ward, and ICU for all neurosurgical patients and supported senior surgeons in all neurooncological cases. In 2015, he was accepted into the MCh Neurosurgery program at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Bengaluru. NIMHANS is one of India’s most known and respected unique neurosciences institutions of national significance. He helped in and performed a range of simple to complicated neurosurgical procedures. As chief resident, he continued to hone his surgical talents at NIMHANS for an additional year. In 2019, he held the position of Associate Consultant in neurosurgery at the PD Hinduja National Hospital and Medical Research Centre in Mumbai. In November 2020, he finished a one-year fellowship in Surgical Neuro-Oncology as a Clinical Fellow at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai. His love for neuro-oncology was evident from the start, as he wrote his MCh dissertation on “Quality of life outcomes in malignant juvenile posterior fossa brain tumors.” In the last five years, he has successfully completed over a thousand cases including trauma & emergency, vascular, spinal, pediatric, neuro-endoscopy, and cancer. During this period, he oversaw and directed around thirty neurosurgeon trainees. He is a skilled clinician and educator who is qualified to supervise the surgical education of his younger colleagues. He is well-read, has been published, and has presented posters and papers at national and international conferences. In 2019, he was an invited speaker at the Walter Dandy meet Nepal event. He was one of three candidates selected by the Leksell Gamma Knife Radiosurgery Society from hundreds of applications worldwide for a prestigious Leksell Radiosurgery Fellowship for 2020 in UPMC, Pittsburgh, United States.
