Education & Experience:
Born in Hong Kong, Dr Wai Chun Hang Daniel was awarded a scholarship by the Ministry of Education to pursue his studies in Singapore. He chose subsequently to make Singapore his home. He received a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery degree from the National University of Singapore in 1998, and a Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) degree from the Royal College of Physicians (United Kingdom) in Singapore in 2001. Later, at the Singapore General Hospital, he underwent specialized specialist training and completed it in 2006.
Dr Wai Chun Hang Daniel went to the Alfred Hospital and Baker Heart Research Institute in Melbourne, Australia, from 2007 to 2008 for further training in lipid disorder management. Upon his return, he ran the Lipid Clinic, treating many patients with cholesterol issues that are hard to treat. In 2010, he was named Director of his department’s Obesity and Metabolic Unit, heading a team of physicians, dietitians, physiotherapists and psychologists to provide medical and surgical care for issues with obesity and cholesterol.
Over the years, Dr Wai Chun Hang Daniel has given more than 135 local and international lectures on diabetes, cholesterol, obesity and thyroid issues. The media, medical students, physiotherapists, dietitians, traditional Chinese doctors, cardiologists, ophthalmologists, and other specialists in internal medicine ranged from the audience. From October 2010 to Dec 2011, he was Adjunct Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the National University of Medicine.
Dr Wai has been involved in research and has been a lead researcher in cholesterol, visceral fat, cardiovascular risk factors and thyroid eye disease genetics studies, with funding from the National Medical Research Council and the Biomedical Research Council. These research institutes have frequently invited him to review the application for a research grant, as well as to review research papers in local and foreign journals.
Dr Wai Chun Hang Daniel remains most enthusiastic about patient care, as fascinating as management, teaching and research are. In appreciation of the outstanding care he gave to his patients, he was awarded the Service with A Heart Award by the Singapore General Hospital 3 times. He speaks Mandarin, Cantonese, Bahasa Indonesia and English. He was frequently contacted by the media on issues related to obesity, diabetes and cholesterol treatment.
