Dr Wong Te Ching Mark is a general surgeon practicing at the Novena Hospital of Mount Elizabeth.
In both cancer and benign bowel conditions, his special ties are in minimally invasive (laparoscopic) and robotic surgery.
Dr Wong Te Ching Mark graduated in 1999 from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and received his fellowship diploma in 2004 from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. At Singapore General Hospital, he continued to complete his advanced surgical training. In 2008, he completed the Joint Specialization Fellowship in General Surgery review, where he received a gold medal from the College of Surgeons. In the same year, he was admitted as a fellow to the Academy of Medicine (Surgery).
In 2009, Dr Wong Te Ching Mark was awarded the Health Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) Scholarship from the Singapore Government to obtain fellowship training at the renowned University Hospital of Nantes in France in minimally invasive colorectal surgery. This was followed in 2014 by a second HMDP scholarship to study at the renowned pelvic floor unit of the University Hospital of Aarhus in Denmark for pelvic floor and functional colorectal disorders.
In his 15-year public service career, Dr Wong was a senior consultant at the Department of Colorectal Surgery of the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and a visiting consultant at the Surgical Oncology Division of the Singapore National Cancer Centre. Dr Mark Wong was the longest-serving Director of the SGH Pelvic Floor Disorders Service prior to beginning his private practice.
In this role, he led a multidisciplinary team of clinicians to provide holistic treatment for patients with pelvic floor disorders, including incontinence, chronic constipation and organ prolapse, consisting of colorectal surgeons, gynaecologists and urologists. He was named Director of the Gastrointestinal Function Unit of SGH in 2016, where he led a team of gastroenterologists and surgeons to treat patients with gastrointestinal functional disorders.
In pelvic floor surgery at SGH, Dr Wong pioneered robotic and laparoscopic procedures, where he performed the first successful incontinence sacral neuromodulation (SNS) implant. He is well-versed in laparoscopic and robotic surgery, proctology, advanced surgical endoscopy, and functional bowel disorders such as constipation and incontinence for both cancer and benign disorders. He remains a visiting senior advisor to the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital today.
In the care of patients, he has collaborated with colorectal surgeons across Europe, the USA and Asia, gaining a global perspective. He is a pioneer in the field of minimally invasive colorectal surgery and pelvic floor surgery (laparoscopic and robotic), having been invited to speak at various local, regional and international colorectal conferences. From all over Southeast Asia, including Bangladesh, Myanmar, the Philippines and Vietnam, he has also mentored and trained international colorectal surgery fellows.
Dr Wong Te Ching Mark is a committed teacher and has been named Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS. Dr Wong Te Ching Mark has been a key faculty of the Residency Program for Singhealth General Surgery and has been instrumental in maintaining surgical education standards. In the past, he served as the Honorary Secretary of the Society of Singapore Colorectal Surgeons. He is currently a member of the European Society of Coloproctology, the Asian Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Society, the Singapore Society of Colorectal Surgeons and the Continence Society of Singapore.
In international peer-reviewed colorectal journals, he has authored many book chapters and numerous publications. He continues to be an expert reviewer for international colorectal papers, including Colorectal Disease and Techniques in Coloproctology, in recognition of his clinical experience and scientific contribution.
In appreciation of his outstanding clinical results and concern for his patients, Dr Wong Te Ching Mark is the recipient of several awards, including the SGH CEO Service Award, the Heart of Gold, and the Service with a Heart Award.
