- Dr Chao Siew Shuen is an ENT surgeon at Gleneagles Hospital in Singapore. She specializes in treating adults and children with ear, nose, and throat disorders. She is particularly well-known for her treatment of nasal (nose) and sinus disorders such as asthma, obstruction, bleeding, infection, polyps (non-cancerous growths), and tumors.
She has extensive experience conducting open and endoscopic sinus surgery, as well as complicated procedures to treat conditions affecting the skull base and eye orbit, the region between the eyeball and the bony socket.
Dr Chao Siew Shuen completed her undergraduate studies in medicine and surgery at the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1993. She then pursued specialist training and was certified as a specialist in otorhinolaryngology (ENT) by the Singapore Medical Council in 2002. She then earned a Healthcare Manpower Development Program (HDMP) scholarship in 2003 to obtain subspecialty training in sinus surgery and allergy at the University of Iowa in the United States of America.
- Dr Chao Siew Shuen previously worked at the National University Hospital as a senior consultant ENT surgeon in the Department of Otolaryngology and as the director of clinical services (NUH).
Dr Chao was instrumental in the establishment of many critical clinical services at NUH, including the rhinology and allergy program, which provides integrated diagnosis and care for patients with nose and sinus conditions. Additionally, she collaborated with the Department of Ophthalmology to provide multidisciplinary assessment and endoscopic surgical treatment to patients suffering from orbital conditions such as thyroid eye disease and optic nerve injury. In 2009, she co-founded the endoscopic skull-base program with the Division of Neurosurgery to provide minimally invasive treatment for pituitary and skull base tumors.
Apart from clinical practice, Dr Chao was an associate professor at the National University of Singapore’s Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. From 2007 to 2009, she also served as the head of undergraduate teaching.
Dr Chao has been invited to share her expertise and skills in endoscopic sinus surgery with ENT specialists from Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Myanmar. She publishes frequently in peer–reviewed international journals and has presented her work at a variety of international scientific meetings, where she has received various awards and prizes.
