In the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London, he was named the first Professor of Acute Medicine in the United Kingdom. The Chelsea and Westminster Campus now houses the Department of Acute Medicine.
The department is the main academic department in this subject, with a growing research portfolio that includes the NIHR CLAHRC for Northwest London, a £20 million research project that is now in its eighth year. The initiative, which aims to speed the translation of research into practice, has successfully supported over 60 change projects and is currently working on a new systematic approach to health care delivery that includes the use of big data and high-fidelity quality improvement approaches.
Other areas of interest for research include the organization and delivery of health care in connection to patient outcomes, as well as the use of co-production as a critical component of study design and care delivery. In addition, the department, which employs over 30 people, is developing expertise in the role of patient and public participation in research.
Modules in three Imperial College Master’s programs, including Global Health, are coordinated by the department. Dr Derek Bell presently serves as President of the Royal College of Physicians and as a consultant to a number of government programs.
