Dr Germaine Xu is a dedicated general surgeon who specializes in oncoplastic breast surgery. She earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from the esteemed Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore in 2003, followed by the completion of her Masters of Medicine (Surgery). Dr Germaine Xu pursued advanced general surgical training and achieved her fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2014.
Following her fellowship, she embarked on a year-long journey as part of the Singapore Ministry of Health (MOH) Human Manpower Development Program (HMDP) fellowship.
During this period, she honed her skills in oncoplastic breast surgery at the renowned Nottingham Breast Unit, working closely with Dr. Douglas MacMillan and Dr. Tuabin Rasheed. Dr. Xu also gained valuable experience at prestigious institutions such as the Edinburgh Breast Unit under the guidance of Professor Mike Dixon, the European Institute of Oncology (IEO), and the Paris Breast Centre under Dr. Krishnan Clough.
Dr Germaine Xu’s professional journey led her to become a Breast Oncoplastic and General Surgical Consultant at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, where she established and developed the Breast Oncoplastic Unit. Today, she serves as a Consultant Breast Oncoplastic Surgeon in private practice.
Dr Germaine Xu’s clinical expertise encompasses a wide range of breast-related conditions, including benign breast diseases like fibroadenomas, phyllodes tumors, nipple discharge, and breast infections. She is also highly skilled in the management of premalignant breast diseases and breast cancer.
Her surgical repertoire includes lumpectomies (including wire-guided or radio-occult localization), mastectomies (simple, skin or nipple sparing), single or dual technique sentinel node biopsy (including sentimag sentinel node biopsy), axillary clearances, and various reconstructive procedures following partial or total breast excisions. These techniques may involve lateral intercostal artery perforator (LICAP) flaps, anterior intercostal artery perforator flaps, normal or extended latissimus dorsi flaps, implant reconstruction, and lipofilling.
Dr Germaine Xu holds the distinction of being the first surgeon in Singapore to perform laparoscopic harvested omental flap procedures for partial breast reconstruction in 2017, benefiting two patients significantly. For individuals at exceptionally high risk of breast cancer, such as BRCA 1/2 mutation carriers, Dr. Xu also offers prophylactic mastectomies to help mitigate their risk.
Beyond breast-related care, Dr Germaine Xu excels as a general surgeon, proficient in both open and laparoscopic surgeries. Her expertise extends to procedures like laparoscopic appendectomies, laparoscopic cholecystectomies (for elective and emergency cases), laparoscopic ventral (abdominal wall) and inguinal hernia repairs, as well as laparoscopic staging procedures. She is also well-versed in elective and emergency endoscopic procedures, including gastroscopy and colonoscopy.
Dr. Xu’s commitment to medical education is evident through her past roles as a clinical tutor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS) and the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (NTU).
