Dr James Calder has worked with international athletes and sports professionals such as the Barclays Premier League football teams, FC Barcelona, AC Milan, Real Madrid, and Aviva Premiership rugby clubs, as well as the British Olympic team, British athletics, gymnastics, hockey, netball, and sailing, and England cricket, rugby, and soccer. Dr James Calder worked as a foot and ankle fellow under Dr. Terry Saxby in Brisbane for a year before receiving a traveling sports orthopaedic fellowship in the United States. James began his career as a consultant at the North Hampshire Hospital in Basingstoke in 2002, then went to the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in 2010, and then to Imperial College in London in 2014.
Dr James Calder continues to work on research initiatives at Imperial College and the London-based Fortius Clinic, where he was a founding member. He is the Chairman of the Achilles Tendon Study Group and Vice-President of ESSKA-AFAS. He served on the Clinical Studies Group for Arthritis Research UK from 2011 to 2014 as Associate Editor of Knee Surgery, Sports, Traumatology, and Arthroscopy (KSSTA) Journal, and has been Medical Adviser to Dance UK since 2012.
Achilles tendon, articular cartilage, and sports-related ankle and foot injuries are among his key research interests. He’s developed a strong clinical interest in arthroscopic (keyhole) treatment of ankle disorders and sports-related foot and ankle injuries, and now treats a number of professional players. James is a member of the Bone and Joint Journal Editorial Board and the Specialty Editor for Foot and Ankle.
