Professional Statement
Professor Michael Steinberg is the Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine’s Department of Radiation Oncology. He writes and lectures on a number of clinical oncology and health policy problems, including service delivery and quality, patient safety, evidence-based validation of innovative technologies, healthcare economics, disparities, and value. Dr Steinberg concentrates on prostate cancer, breast cancer, and head and neck cancer in his clinical practice. He is presently the Director of Clinical Affairs at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center. He was the principal investigator for a $3.5 million National Cancer Institute Cancer Disparity Research grant and a health services research investigator and publication author at the RAND Corporation.
Through his many leadership positions, Dr Steinberg’s participation on health policy and economic concerns on behalf of patients and his speciality has been important on a national scale. He is the founding Chair of the Health Policy Council of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), and he served as President and Chairman of the Board of ASTRO from 2010 to 2014. Dr. Steinberg was awarded the ASTRO Gold Medal in 2017 for his advancements in patient care, research, and dedication to the field. Dr Steinberg was the radiation oncology representative on the American Medical Association’s CPT Editorial Panel for eight years and spent two terms on the CMS Medicare Evidence and Coverage Advisory Committee (MCAC). Currently, he is a member of the California Technical Assessment Forum, a public technology and medication evaluation body that compares the efficacy of medical therapies.
Dr Michael is linked with a number of regional institutions, including UCLA Medical Center and Northridge Hospital Medical Center. He has been practicing law for almost 20 years.
