- Dr Ng Choon Yong Alvin is a respiratory physician and intensivist in Singapore, where he practices at Parkway East Hospital, Gleneagles Hospital, and Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
He is particularly interested in obstructive airway disorders such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as intrusive mechanical ventilation for ICU patients. He is committed to providing his patients with individualized, patient-centered treatment.
Dr Ng Choon Yong Alvin earned the Singapore Armed Forces Medical Scholarship in 1996 and attended the National University of Singapore to study medicine (NUS). He graduated from NUS in 2001 and pursued internal medicine training, eventually becoming a specialist in respiratory medicine and intensive care medicine. - Prior to entering private practice, he worked as a consultant in the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at Changi General Hospital, where he also served as deputy director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit. Dr Alvin Ng was also a lieutenant colonel in the Singapore Armed Forces, and his most recent appointment was as commanding officer of the Medical Classification Centre (MCC), where he was responsible for all SAF and Mindef personnel’s PES (Physical Employment Status) assignments. He holds the title and qualification of Respiratory and Intensive Care Medicine Consultant for the Singapore Armed Forces.
Dr Ng Choon Yong Alvin is committed to educating the next generation of clinical doctors and previously served as the Deputy Commander of the SAF Medical Training Institute, which is responsible for the SAF’s medical training. He previously served as the medical director of the Singapore Armed Forces Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Center and is now the medical director of the St John Singapore National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians Course.
He served as president of both the Society of Intensive Care Medicine and the Singapore Thoracic Society. He was also a member of the executive committee of the Academy of Medicine’s Chapter of Intensivists in Singapore.
Dr Alvin Ng is currently a volunteer with the St John Brigade Singapore, where he holds the position of Deputy Chief Surgeon.
Additionally, Dr Alvin Ng holds various teaching positions, including Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Instructor, Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Instructor, Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) Instructor, Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care (BASIC) Instructor, and EuSim Advance Medical Training Simulation Instructor. He previously taught in the Respiratory Medicine Core Faculty, Internal Medicine Physician Faculty, Intensive Care Medicine Subspecialty Faculty, and NUS Undergraduate Clinical Faculty at Changi General Hospital.
Dr Alvin Ng has participated in peacekeeping operations and disaster relief programs on a global scale. He received the United Nations Peace Keeping Medal and a letter of commendation from the United Nations Force Commander for his contributions as a member of the medical team for the United Nations Mission in Support of East Timor.
Dr Alvin Ng is a firm believer in giving back to the community and has remained involved in both the Society of Intensive Care Medicine (SICM) and the Singapore Thoracic Society (STS) to advance intensive care and respiratory medicine activities in Singapore. He also served as the organizing chairman of the 2017 SGANZICS Asia Pacific Intensive Care Forum, whose mission is to assist Low Income Countries in the field of Intensive Care Medicine and to facilitate the exchange of ideas and best practices between Western and Asian nations.
