- Dr Por Yong Ming earned an honours degree in 1997 from the University of Melbourne. He received several awards during this time period, including those in biochemistry, microbiology, and ophthalmology, and spent several years on the Dean’s Honours list. He then returned to Singapore to complete his basic surgical training in ophthalmology at the renowned Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom.
Dr Por Yong Ming completed his advanced surgical training in ophthalmology in 2006 at the Singapore National Eye Centre. This was followed by a fellowship in corneal and refractive surgery with Professor Donald Tan, during which he gained experience in newer methods of corneal transplantation, including deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) and Descemets Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK). These cutting-edge approaches enhance patient outcomes by lowering rejection rates and, in some cases, facilitating much faster vision recovery.
Dr Por is also well-versed in refractive surgery procedures such as LASIK and Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) surgery. He applies the concepts of this experience to his cataract patients as well, in order to minimize their need for spectacles following cataract surgery.
- Dr Por Yong Ming is a cataract surgeon who specializes in both regular and complex cataract surgery. He has considerable experience measuring lens implant strength and conducting cataract surgery on patients who have previously undergone refractive surgery, such as LASIK. Many of his cataract patients have already undergone corneal transplantation or retinal surgery.
Dr Por is also an academic, having authored many book chapters and 28 journal articles in international peer-reviewed journals. These have focused on cataract surgery and corneal transplantation in particular. He was also the Chief Editor of the Ophthalmic Paramedical and Nursing Handbook, a succinct and practical reference guide for paramedical personnel on widely used drugs and ophthalmic procedures.
Dr Por previously worked at the Singapore National Eye Centre as a Clinical Tutor for undergraduate medical students and is a true believer in patient education. To promote patient access to both himself and eye-related information, he maintains an active blog at http://eyesurgerysingapore.blogspot.com.
