  • Dr Quah Hak Mien is a general and colorectal surgeon at Singapore’s Gleneagles Hospital.
    His areas of specialization include anal diseases, piles, and functional bowel conditions such as chronic bowel disorder, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
    He is skilled in laparoscopic (keyhole) and single incision laparoscopic (single keyhole) colorectal surgery, as well as gallbladder and appendix removal. Additionally, Dr Quah treats pelvic floor disorders and prolapsed bladders. He is particularly interested in perianal diseases and hemorrhoids (piles).
  • Since robotic-assisted colorectal surgery was first adopted, Dr Quah Hak Mien was accredited to perform it.
    He holds degrees from the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom and Singapore’s National University. He also received surgical training at the Glan Clwyd Hospital in Wales, United Kingdom. Dr Quah Hak Mien was awarded a Health Manpower Development Plan (HMDP) scholarship in 2006 to seek subspecialty training in colorectal surgery at New York’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. While there, he collaborated with Dr Douglas Wong, the late chief of the Colorectal Service, on colorectal cancer research, especially sphincter-preservative rectal cancer surgery and recurrent pelvic cancer operations.
    Dr Quah previously worked at the Singapore General Hospital as a consultant in the department of colorectal surgery and as the director of the Singapore Polyposis Registry. He was also a visiting consultant at the National Cancer Centre Singapore’s department of surgical oncology.
    He was named assistant professor on a part-time basis at Duke-NUS Medical School. He has taught laparoscopic and endoscopic skill courses to trainee surgeons from both home and abroad, focusing on the use of simulation machines.
    Dr Quah has written scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters both locally and internationally, and serves as a reviewer for the Singapore Medical Journal and the Annals of Surgical Oncology.
