She embarked on her educational journey as a Public Service Commission scholar, earning her bachelor’s degree from the National University of Singapore (NUS). Dr. Yap honed her skills while working at prominent healthcare institutions like Singapore General Hospital and National University Hospital (NUH).
In 1988, NUH sponsored Dr. Yap’s pursuit of a postgraduate degree at the prestigious Eastman Dental Hospital in London, UK. Upon completing her advanced training, she returned to Singapore and took on the role of Registrar at NUH. Additionally, from 1989 to 1993, she contributed her expertise as a clinical supervisor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry at NUS.
In 1993, Dr Shirley Yap transitioned to private practice but continued to give back to the community by volunteering for numerous medical-dental missions in Cambodia, Vietnam, the Philippines, China, and Mongolia.
